Description

Bionova® BT222 is a super-fast biological indicator developed to verify the effectiveness of steam sterilization processes (121–135 °C). It is based on spores of Geobacillus stearothermophilus, which is the reference organism for steam sterilization according to ISO.

The indicator is self-contained (SCBI) and contains both the pathogen and the culture medium in a single integrated ampoule. After the sterilization cycle, the indicator is activated and incubated in an automated reader at approximately 60 °C. Results are obtained via fluorescence as early as 1 hour, enabling rapid release of medical devices and reducing wait times in clinical settings.

If sterilization fails, metabolic activity from surviving spores is detected via a fluorescent signal. As an alternative or for verification, a visual color change can be used (48 hours or up to 7 days during validation), in which the culture medium changes color as growth occurs.

The BT222 is compatible with both vacuum processes and gravity cycles and is used in healthcare, dentistry, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, where fast and reliable biological validation is required.
