An ATP measurement is quick and easy—it takes just a few seconds and requires no special prior knowledge. Using a Clean-Trace™ ATP-meter an ATP test, the measurement is performed in three simple steps: sampling, activation, and reading.
Here, we share some tips for getting the best possible results from your Clean-Trace™ ATP-meter.

ATP can be collected from surfaces or water. For surfaces, an ATP is used, which consists of a test tube containing a pre-moistened swab and a liquid reagent. For water samples, a dip tube is used instead. The swab or dip tube is returned to the test tube after sampling.
To measure ATP in a sample, a sensitive light meter—called a luminometer or ATP-meter—is required. The unit of measurement is usually specified in femtomoles of ATP. However, when measuring ATP, it has proven easier to express the measured value in relative light units (RLU).The RLU value provides a measure of the hygiene level and is displayed directly on the screen.
Swab Tips for ATP Measurement
Perhaps the most important step in ATP when sampling surfaces is to use the swab correctly. Below, we describe best practices for using ATP Clean-trace ATP:
- Wipe a representative area of the surface to be inspected. Typically, a 10×10 cm area on a flat, non-porous surface.
- Swipe horizontally from one side to the other, continue mopping the entire surface, and repeat the process vertically from top to bottom. Each time you lift the mop, take the opportunity to rotate it slightly. This way, you’ll use the entire mop.
- When you have finished swabbing, return the swab to the device. Activate the test by pressing the swab handle down into the tube.
- Be sure to shake the test from side to side for at least five seconds to ensure that the reagents are mixed. Shake only from side to side; never shake the test up and down, as this may cause the test tube to leak. Read the test on your ATP-meter after shaking.
