Clean-Trace® Water-Free ATP
Clean-Trace® Water-Free ATP is an ATP water test for the rapid quantification of free ATP in water samples, for direct verification of cleaning using ATP-meter Clean-Trace™ ATP-meter.
Description
Clean-Trace® Water-Free ATP a rapid test for analyzing free (extracellular) ATP water, such as rinse water, CIP systems, and process water. The test is used to verify cleaning effectiveness by quantifying dissolved organic matter without interference from intact microorganisms.
Samples are collected via integrated collection rings and react with the luciferin/luciferase reagent in the test chamber. The light signal generated is measured in a Clean-Trace Luminometer and reported as RLU. The signal intensity is proportional to the amount of free ATP the sample.
By comparing the results from Water-Free ATP those from Clean-Trace™ Water Plus – Total ATP , the proportion of microbial ATP can ATP , providing a clearer picture of the source of contamination.

Free ATP extracellular ATP) is ATP is present in a dissolved state in the sample outside of intact cells. It originates from organic material, cell debris, or dead microorganisms and primarily reflects residual contamination remaining after cleaning—not active microbial activity.
If you measure:
• Total ATP everything (living + dead + organic debris)
• Free ATP only dissolved/non-cell-bound
Then you can estimate:
Microbial ATP Total ATP Free ATP
What this means in practice:
High free ATP, low microbial ATP
→ poor cleaning (organic residue), but not necessarily bacterial growth
Low free ATP, high microbial ATP
→ clean surface/water but biological growth (biofilm/bacteria)
High levels of both
→ both dirt and microbial contamination
