Lumitester™ Smart
Lumitester™ Smart is a portable luminometer for quick and objective verification of cleaning results. When used with the LuciPac A3 test kits, the instrument measures ATP, ADP, and AMP and displays the results in RLU after 10 seconds.
Description
Lumitester Smart is used to verify whether surfaces, water, and other sampling points have been cleaned sufficiently. The system provides a measurement result on-site and can detect residual organic matter that indicates inadequate cleaning.
The instrument is used in conjunction with compatible LuciPac sampling units. The LuciPac A3 measures ATP, ADP, and AMP, providing a broader indication of residual organic contaminants than measuring ATP alone.
Features
- Easy to use for daily hygiene checks
- Compact and portable design for flexible use
- Fast measurement results within 10 seconds
- A3 Technology for Measuring ATP, ADP, and AMP
- App and cloud service for analysis and monitoring
- AOAC PTM 051901 and PTM 112201, along with LuciPac A3 Surface
Foods typically contain high levels of ATP and can therefore be easily detected using traditional ATP tests. During processing and heating, some of the ATP in food is broken down into ADP and AMP. A test that measures only ATP may therefore yield a low result even though residues from processed foods remain. Kikkoman’s A3 method measures ATP, ADP, and AMP. This provides more sensitive detection of residues from many processed foods. Typical foods that contain more ADP/AMP than ATP include:
- Meat products—especially bacon, sausage, and salami
- Canned fish and shellfish—such as tuna and crab
- Fermented dairy products—especially cheese
- Prepared grain products—bread, pasta, noodles, and cooked rice
- Canned or heat-treated fruit
- Fermented products and flavorings—such as soy sauce, vinegar, and yeast extract
- Coffee and certain types of processed tea
For the Lumitester Smart with the A3 “ LuciPac , ” the following threshold values are recommended as a starting point in food production:
| Surface Type | Approved | Warning | Fail |
|---|---|---|---|
| A smooth, easy-to-clean surface that comes into direct contact with food, such as stainless steel | ≤200 RLU | 201–400 RLU | >400 RLU |
| Uneven or difficult-to-clean surfaces, such as plastic, conveyor belts, and cutting boards | ≤500 RLU | 501–1,000 RLU | >1 000 RLU |
LuciPac A3 measures the total light signal from ATP, ADP, and AMP. These substances have separate response curves, and the distribution among them in a real sample is normally unknown. A measured RLU value therefore cannot be converted to a specific amount of ATP, ADP, or AMP. Nor can it be converted to a number of microorganisms.
The RLU result is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the cleaning process against established limit values and to track changes and trends over time.
The limit values above are recommended starting values. They should then be adjusted based on the surface material, product, cleaning process, and the facility’s own measurement results.
LuciPac A3 Water is used for water and other liquids, such as final rinse water after CIP cleaning. For liquids, there is no general limit value that applies to all applications.
Clean tap water typically yields approximately 0–30 RLU. This can be used as a reference for final rinse water, but the facility’s own action limit should be determined based on the incoming water, the specific product, and the cleaning process. A preliminary guideline value of, for example, ≤30 or ≤50 RLU can be used until the facility has established its own set of measurement data.
For hands and contact surfaces in healthcare settings, the following levels can be used as practical guidelines:
| Checkpoint | Approved | Warning | Fail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occurs after hand washing | ≤2 000 RLU | 2,001–4,000 RLU | >4 000 RLU |
| Surface Areas in Health Care and Social Services | ≤500 RLU | 501–1,000 RLU | >1 000 RLU |
| Smooth, patient-facing surfaces with high hygiene standards | ≤200 RLU | 201–400 RLU | >400 RLU |
For hands, the measurement shows the amount of organic residue remaining after handwashing. The result does not verify the effectiveness of hand sanitizer and does not indicate whether the hands are free of disease-causing microorganisms.
The values for healthcare surfaces are practical starting points and not Swedish national limit values. Sampling must be standardized for each inspection point; for example, by sampling the same surface or the entire handle in the same way at each inspection.
Note: The RLU values apply to Lumitester and cannot be directly transferred to other measurement and reagent systems.
