It takes a lot of time to count colonies visually on an agar plate, which is why automatic colony counters can be extremely valuable when numerous analyses are required. The 3M™ Petrifilm™ Plate Reader Advanced automates colony counting for Petrifilm™ and promises significant time savings. But how does 3M’s automatic reader compare to visual colony counting?
3M has conducted a study to demonstrate the accuracy of the 3M™ Petrifilm™ Plate Reader Advanced(Technical Bulletin 694432). The study comparedthe results obtained through manual colony counting with those obtained using the system. The comparison tested various concentrations and a wide range of food types. In the dilution study, an accuracy of at least 94% was achieved. In the food matrices,an accuracy of91–100%was achieved.
